Deakin University- Institute for Technology Research and Innovation

ITRI is located in the Geelong Technology Precinct which currently consists of four buildings. The main building contains research facilities and office space for the Institute accommodating 200 people. The research is focussed on advanced manufacturing and materials, biotechnology and intelligent systems. The three other buildings house more research.

The Precinct also accommodates a number of co-locators.

Specialised areas: PC2. Number of areas: 0-2 (soon) Contract capacity availability: Our facilities can be utilised for contract work or collaborative partnerships. Lab space is minimal at the moment but all equipment use can be negotiated. We have vast land available for co-locators and some remaining building space.

AAHL Collaborative Biosecurity Research Facility (ACBRF)

The ACBRF facilities that will be available for external research activities will be:

  • 370 square metres of high grade PC4 laboratory space
  • new and existing PC3 laboratory space (potentially enhanced – with liquid effluent treatment and PC standard – without liquid effluent treatment) totalling up to 1 700 square metres.

The 370 square metres of new PC4 space is being constructed within the existing AAHL north suite (32 x 32 m = 1024 sq metres) currently PC3 enhanced space.

The new PC4 and PC3 facilities will incorporate a specialist microscopy service, including live-cell imaging and advanced electron microscopy capability.
This specialist microscopy service – called the AAHL Biosecurity Microscopy Facility (ABMF) – is a Linked Laboratory of the Australian Microscopy & Microanalysis Research Facility (AMMRF), another national facility funded by NCRIS.

Site area: 14.5 Hectares.

Number of buildings and sizes: The 370 square metres of new PC4 space is being constructed within the existing AAHL north suite (32 x 32 m = 1024 sq metres) currently PC3 enhanced space. Unsure of extent of PC3 (specialised) space and facilities at present.

Notes: PC3 (enhanced) space will soon (July 2009) be available to non-CSIRO researchers under a National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy funded initiative and 370 square metres of PC4 space is currently being constructed under the same initiative. Further PC3 (enhanced) and/or PC3 (standard) space is under consideration. This will be determined once the PC3 lab user needs review is completed - end of April 2009.

CSIRO Livestock Industries’ Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL)

Broadly speaking, AAHL is made up of the following areas:

  1. Large Animal Facility (LAF) and Animal Entry Building
  2. PC3/PC4 laboratory space – three scientific suites: north, south and centre
  3. PC3 Diagnostic Emergency Response Laboratory (DERL) (opened 2008)
  4. Office administration, three main meeting rooms, auditorium seating ~ 200
  5. PC2 laboratories and Small Animal Facility (SAF) totalling around 2,500 square metres
  6. Scientific services and supply – glass wash, laundry, stores, media production
  7. Engineering services building and machine hall
  8. Shower block (staff enter and exit through this block to access the PC3 area)
  9. Remaining Vaccine Production Unit (VPU) space. The VPU was never fitted out or commissioned. Some VPU space was used to establish DERL.
